BUSY. GROWING. CAUGHT IN THE ILLUSION OF THE HAMSTER WHEEL?

Recently I celebrated the launch of my book, 3 Months Forward. As an ice breaker, I asked the room a question. What does Profitless Prosperity mean to you?

Nearly every person in that room wrote an answer.

Some were numbers.. Nothing left in the bank.

Some were feelings.. Working hard for nothing. Tiring.

Some cut straight to the bone.. Gross is vanity. Nett is opinion. Cash is fact.

One answer caught my attention.. An illusion.

Something that looks, sounds, or feels like one thing. But is actually different. Or not real at all.

Think about how well that fits around you.

The business is growing. Everybody is busy. It feels successful.

That's the illusion holding.

Here's what makes it so hard to break.

Everyone around you is telling you you're on the right track. Sales are up. The phone doesn't stop. The team is stretched. Who's going to argue with that?

But look at where the money actually goes.

It comes in. And it goes straight back out — to suppliers, to staff, to the tax office, to everyone but you.

Everyone else gets paid.

You, the owner, did the hard work of creating that value in the first place. Then you watch it leave the account almost as fast as it arrived.

That's not a bank balance problem. That's a margin problem.

So how do you know if you're living the illusion?

Ask yourself one question: after every bill is paid — including a proper wage for yourself — is there anything left in the business?

If the honest answer is no, you're not broke. You're not failing. You're just running without margin.

Money will always come in and go out. That never stops.

The only thing you can control is how much stays in.

That's why I built the 3 Margin Framework™.

Three checkpoints, each set as a percentage of revenue, so they scale with the business instead of guessing in the dark.

A Customer Margin — what's left after covering product, people (your wage included), and promotion. A Profit Margin — what's left after everything else. A Cash Flow Margin — the working capital sitting behind you.

Three margins. Three jobs.

1. Cover you when you make an error.

2. Cover you when the forecast is wrong.

3. Cover you when an opportunity turns up and you need cash fast.

But the real power isn't in the definitions. It's in what they let you do next.

They let you calculate where your business will actually sit in 90 days' time.

That's the window where you can still change the outcome. Not last quarter. Not last year. The next 90 days.

3 Months Forward is exactly that — one hour, once a quarter, to know what your three margins look like before the quarter closes, not after it.

Melissa Roberts is a bookkeeper and CPA. She spends her working life helping other people understand their numbers.

Applying that same rigour to her own business was a different story — until she worked through 3 Months Forward herself.

"It gave me clarity and confidence in my forecasts that I simply didn't have before," she told me. "I moved from a vague sense of where things were heading to a structured, reliable picture of what the next three months actually look like."

If someone who works with numbers every day needed that shift, it was never really about the numbers. It's about having the framework — and someone to walk through it with you.

Less guessing. Less stress. More money staying where it belongs.

If your margins today are poor, that's not a verdict on you.

It's just information.

You built something that's growing. That's real. The long hours are real. The value you're creating for your customers is real.

The only thing missing is a margin that lets some of that value stay with you.

That's fixable. Not overnight. But with a framework — and a plan for the next 90 days — it's fixable.

And if any of this landed close to home, you're not on your own with it. Nearly everyone in that room wrote something that pointed to the same place.

The illusion breaks the day you decide to look forward instead of just working harder.
